Flooring Cost Guide 2026: Prices per Square Foot for Every Major Material

Fourteen flooring projects, one dataset. Every price on this page comes from the HouseholdDecors 2026 Cost Index, our verified database of published national cost bands. Across the 13 flooring records priced per square foot, the median typical installed rate is $7 per square foot, and published bands run from $1 to $30 depending on the material and the scope. Start with the comparison, use the decision framework to pick a material, then price your rooms with the calculator.

What flooring costs in 2026

Solid hardwood is the premium staple at $11 to $25 per square foot installed, typical $18 in the Index, and a carpet to hardwood conversion runs $12 to $30 because removal is included. Engineered hardwood covers the same look for less upfront at $9 to $20; the combined engineered versus solid record in the Index spans $9 to $25 with a typical of $16. At the value end, laminate ($3 to $13, typical $8) and luxury vinyl plank ($3 to $16, typical $7) sit side by side. Tile ($8 to $30, typical $17) is the priciest mainstream surface per square foot after hardwood conversions, and carpet ($3 to $11, typical $6) stays the soft budget option.

The floor itself is not the whole bill. Removal, disposal and subfloor work add $1 to $6 per square foot before new material goes down, refinishing an existing hardwood floor costs $3 to $8 instead of replacing it, and stairs are priced separately at $25 to $140 per step. Quotes combine all of these, so this page keeps the prep numbers next to the material numbers.

MaterialInstalled cost per sq ftBest for
Solid hardwood$11 to $25Dry living rooms and bedrooms in a home you plan to keep. It can be sanded and refinished multiple times at $3 to $8 per square foot, which is why it often wins over decades.
Engineered hardwood$9 to $20The same real-wood surface for less upfront: a 300 square foot room runs $2,700 to $6,000. Its thinner wear layer allows fewer refinish cycles than solid.
Laminate$3 to $13Dry bedrooms, living rooms and hallways. The wood-fiber core is water-resistant at best, never waterproof, so keep it away from leaks and standing water.
Luxury vinyl plank (LVP)$3 to $16Kitchens, bathrooms, basements and pet homes. Fully waterproof, and the top of the band buys thicker, more convincing boards.
Tile$8 to $30Wet rooms, entries and anywhere durability leads. Ceramic runs $7 to $15 and porcelain $15 to $25 inside this band, with natural stone at the premium end.
Carpet$3 to $11Bedrooms and low-traffic rooms where softness and the lowest entry price matter more than water resistance or a refinishable surface.

Engineered and solid hardwood share one comparison record in the Index ($9 to $25, typical $16); the split bands in the table are from the engineered vs solid hardwood guide.

Which flooring should you choose?

Four questions settle most projects before price does.

  1. 1. Will the floor get wet?

Start with water, not price. Luxury vinyl plank is waterproof. Laminate has a wood-fiber core, so it is water-resistant at best and standing water swells it. Tile shrugs water off entirely. That one difference settles most kitchens, bathrooms, basements and laundry rooms before cost enters the argument, which is why our laminate vs vinyl decision guide gives room-by-room verdicts first and the cost comparison second.

  2. 2. Which room is it?

Wet and below-grade rooms point to LVP or tile; for a basement, work through the basement flooring guide because moisture testing comes before material choice there. Dry living rooms and bedrooms are where laminate, hardwood and carpet compete on price and feel instead.

  3. 3. What is the budget per square foot?

The Index typicals cluster clearly: carpet at $6, LVP at $7 and laminate at $8 per square foot at the value end, against $16 for the hardwood comparison record and $17 for tile. On a 500 square foot area those typicals work out near $3,000 to $4,000 at the value end and $8,500 to $9,000 for tile or solid hardwood, before prep (derived by simple multiplication of the Index typicals, not quoted project prices).

  4. 4. How long will you keep it?

Solid hardwood can be refinished multiple times at $3 to $8 per square foot, while engineered has a thinner wear layer and fewer refinish cycles, so solid often wins the long game despite costing more upfront. The engineered vs solid guide runs that math room by room, and if your existing floor is hardwood, the refinish vs replace comparison comes before any new-floor decision.

The data behind this page

All figures on this page come from the HouseholdDecors 2026 Cost Index, a verified dataset of published national cost bands, each one traced to cited sources and reviewed before inclusion. The flooring records were last reviewed 2026-10-12. See where flooring sits against every other project in the 33 projects ranked by installed cost, read the Cost Index methodology, or download the source CSV and check every number yourself. If you cite this data, cite it as: HouseholdDecors, 2026 Cost Index.

Limitations: these are national planning bands, not contractor quotes. Local labor rates, material grades, subfloor condition and room layout move final prices, sometimes well outside the typical point. Use the bands to plan and to sanity-check quotes, not to replace them.
